Subgroup Isomorphism Problem for Units of Integral Group Rings

چکیده

The Subgroup Isomorphism Problem for Integral Group Rings asks for which finite groups U it is true that if U is isomorphic to a subgroup of V(ZG), the group of normalized units of the integral group ring of the finite group G, it must be isomorphic to a subgroup of G. The smallest groups known not to satisfy this property are the counterexamples to the Isomorphism Problem constructed by M. Hertweck. However the only groups known to satisfy it are cyclic groups of prime power order and elementary-abelian pgroups of rank 2. We prove the Subgroup Isomorphism Problem for C4 × C2. Moreover we prove that if the Sylow 2-subgroup of G is a dihedral group, any 2-subgroup of V(ZG) is isomorphic to a subgroup of G. Mathematics Subject Classification (2010): 16U60, 16S34, 20C20

FINITE GROUPS OF UNITS AND THEIR COMPOSITION FACTORS IN THE INTEGRAL GROUP RINGS OF THE GROUPS PSL(2, q)

Let G denote the projective special linear group PSL(2, q), for a prime power q. It is shown that a finite 2-subgroup of the group V(ZG) of augmentation 1 units in the integral group ring ZG of G is isomorphic to a subgroup of G. Furthermore, it is shown that a composition factor of a finite subgroup of V(ZG) is isomorphic to a subgroup of G.

Isomorphisms of p-adic group rings

A long-standing problem, first posed by Graham Higman [15] and later by Brauer [4] is the “isomorphism problem for integral group rings.” Given finite groups G and H, is it true that ZG = ZH implies G 2: H? Many authors have worked on this question, but progress has been difficult [30]. Perhaps the best positive result was that of Whitcomb in 1968 [37], who showed that the implication G = H hol...

Some Results on Hypercentral Units in Integral Group Rings

In this note we investigate the hypercentral units in integral group rings ZG, where G is not necessarily torsion. One of the main results obtained is the following (Theorem 3.5): if the set of torsion elements of G is a subgroup T of G and if Z2(U) is not contained in CU (T ), then T is either an Abelian group of exponent 4 or a Q∗ group. This extends our earlier result on torsion group rings.

Recent Progress on the Isomorphism Problem

A long-standing problem, posed first by Graham Higman in 1940 [Hi] and later by Brauer [Br], is the “isomorphism problem for integral group rings.” Given finite groups G and H, is it true that ZG N ZH implies G N H? Many authors have worked on this question but progress has been difficult [Sal. Perhaps the best positive result was that of Whitcomb in 1968 [Wh], who showed that the implication G...

Arithmetic Rigidity and Units in Group Rings

For any finite group G the group U(Z[G]) of units in the integral group ring Z[G] is an arithmetic group in a reductive algebraic group, namely the Zariski closure of SL1(Q[G]). In particular, the isomorphism type of the Q-algebra Q[G] determines the commensurability class of U(Z[G]); we show that, to a large extent, the converse is true. In fact, subject to a certain restriction on the Q-repre...
